Happiness. It is something people are always searching for. What would make you happy, a promotion at work? A dream vacation? Dropping a few pounds over the holidays? A lot of people view happiness as something that is always just out of reach and people tend to base their feelings of happiness on events that need to happen in the future, outside of themselves. So, what are some of the things people get wrong when it comes to happiness?
The Doors of Perception
The way in which you think about something frames your perception of it. Quite often one of the pitfalls people fall into when it comes to happiness is they focus on the wrong things. If you’re trying to lose weight, for example, and find at the end of the week you’ve only managed to drop one pound would that make you happy? If not, you’re thinking about it, and thus altering your perception in the wrong way. Instead, reflect on the things you did right for your body during the week that led to the one pound weight loss. Appreciate how you’ve progressed and give yourself permission to be happy for the little wins along the way.
Work is another place where people tend to misperceive happiness. If you think about all of the things you don’t like about your job then you need to make some changes. Reframe your thinking and focus on the positives. For example, if you have a difficult co-worker who you feel makes your daily work life miserable, don’t focus on how unhappy they make you feel. Instead, think about it as an opportunity to learn valuable coping skills as you interact with that person.
Another mistake people make when it comes to happiness is not noticing the small things that make them happy along the way. Often, they are so focused on a larger goal they don’t take the time to be happy for the little things that have happened in their lives. Be grateful for the things you have and the people in your life who make it better.
It Begins and Ends with You
The only true constant you ever have in your life is yourself. People will come and go, the things you have could be lost or taken away, but you will always have you. How you feel about yourself will have the biggest impact on how happy you are in your daily life.
At the end of the day, you can’t change your weight overnight or find a better job in a single day, but you can change how you think about those things. Take Monty Python’s advice and always try to look on the bright side of life.
