Why Chiropractic Care is the Better Remedy for Back Pain

Whenever I experience back pain (fairly often, as I spend the whole day typing at my desk) I visit my chiropractor. A quick massage and adjustment is usually all I need to walk out of the clinic pain-free.

Chiropractic care is a proven method to help people recover from and prevent further back pain, but many people still choose to see a medical doctor for back problems. This is in spite of research published in Spine, which found that chiropractic care is the better choice.

The researchers in the study found 107 participants suffering from lower back pain. Each was assigned to one of three treatments: manual-thrust manipulation (MTM, or traditional chiropractic care), mechanical-assisted manipulation (MAM) or usual medical care (UMC.) the manipulation groups received eight treatments over four weeks, while the UMC group had three doctor’s visits in the same four weeks.

At the completion of the treatment sessions, MTM patients “showed a statistically significant advantage” over both the MAM and UMC participants. They had a better response when it came to disability factors and also experienced better results when it came to pain, with 94 percent of MTM patients reporting improvement compared to 69 percent of MAM and 56 percent of UMC recipients.

All three methods offered some level of relief, but the one with the fastest amount of self-reported improvement was chiropractic care, by a very wide margin.

Chiropractic care involves a drug-free, hands-on approach to examination, diagnosis and treatment. Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) study for the same number of years as MDs – they simply take a more holistic approach to treatment, primarily focusing on the musculoskeletal system as the cause of most health problems. Chiropractors claim they can cure any number of ailments, but most clients come to them for help with back, neck, shoulder and other muscular aches and pains. Compared to MDs, chiropractors generally have more experience treating back aches and pains.

I’m convinced a chiropractor is the only way to go when you’re struggling with back pain. Medical doctors have offered me surgery and drugs, but only my chiropractor has been able to untangle the knots in my back and make me feel like myself again – all in 45 minutes, no less.

The next time you experience back pain, consider skipping a visit to your physician and seeing a chiropractor instead. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results.
