1. Don’t Say “Calm Down”
The phrase “calm down” can actually make an anxiety sufferer feel more nervous. If they could calm down, don’t you think they would? A better phrase to say to them would be, “what’s making you feel this way?” This phrase can help the anxious person to verbalize what’s going on with them internally, which is turn can help them to work through whatever is bothering them.
2. Panic Attacks Can Always Be Incredibly Inconvenient
Sometimes panic attacks can come out of nowhere. You may be sitting watching TV and all of a sudden your heart will start to race, you will feel fearful and feel like you need to run. Other times panic attacks can come because you are actually afraid of something. For example, one can come right before you are about to ride a big roller coaster or give a presentation at work. The anxiety sufferer knows that their thoughts and feelings can be irrational but they’ve learned to respond in a particular way in those situations so getting panicky is their natural response.
3. Anxiety Can Turn Physical
Contrary to what some people may believe, anxiety disorder doesn’t just affect the mind. People can get physical symptoms that range from heart palpitations and migraine headaches all the way to digestive problems. Although these symptoms are temporary, it can be very scary for the people who are experiencing them.
