Taking a moment to express your gratitude and appreciate what you have is one of the best things you can do for your health. Not only will it build positivity and improve your mental outlook/attitude, but it will also help you build strong relationships with those to whom you express said gratitude. A simple, “thank you” to the barista who makes your coffee can go a long way. Or try writing down five things you are thankful for every morning. ‘Tis the season for being thankful, after all!
Laugh It Up
Bringing more laughter and smiles into your life can lighten your load substantially. Laughter has been shown to play a role in lowering blood pressure and reducing the effects of stress (heart issues, weight gain, insomnia). Even a simple smile triggers a release of feel good hormones in the brain, reducing the presence of the stress hormone, cortisol. So enjoy a funny quote, or a conversation with the office comedian more often!
Making a concentrated effort to improve your posture is one of the best things you can do for your health right this second. Sit/stand up straighter. Avoid slouching and cricking your neck to see the computer monitor. Adjust your work space to encourage good posture, rather than adjusting your body to fit the set up of your desk. This will not only reduce your back and neck pain and tension, but it will encourage better blood flow and circulation, and impact the healthy functioning of your nervous system.
Doing a quick burst of cardiovascular exercise will boost your heart rate quickly, promoting the circulation of oxygenated blood to your tissues, and interrupting the negative health effects of constant sitting. Try a quick set of jumping jacks. Keep a jump rope on hand for a little movement. Or even run in place! Doing this throughout the day will help keep your body active and ready for more. And again, by making small focused choices like these, your efforts will compile to produce an increase in holistic health.
