8 Ways To Get Rid Of Stress At Work

Work can be very stressful. We may try to get all of our work done and do it well, but we have a life outside of work that sometimes gets in the way. Some of us also have anxiety so it makes it almost twice as hard to complete our tasks. If this sounds like you, then check out the following tips to help you stay calm, and finish your work while staying sane.

1. Alternate Between Tasks

If it feels like your brain is going to explode or you want to cry because you’re exhausted, then switch tasks if you can. If you can make your brain focus on something else, you’d be surprised how much more rejuvenated you can feel in just seconds. Been slaving over that project? Stop, take a breath and look over some unrelated paperwork.

2. Aid Someone Else

It can be a great distraction from work woes to help someone else out. If someone needs help understanding something, offer your advice, and lend a hand.

3. Move

Get up, go to the water cooler, take a walk outside, or visit a coworker’s cubicle. Just get up and move because sitting in a chair all day can cause you to get blood clots, can make you overweight, unhealthy and lethargic.

4. Stretch

If you’re typing all day, stretch out your fingers. Start with your left palm facing forward and use your left hand to push your right fingers back. Hold for five seconds, then repeat on the other side.

5. Use Calming Self-Talk

If you’re constantly telling yourself that you’re not going to finish an assignment, worrying about repercussions, or thinking that your boss thinks you’re a fool, then it’s no wonder you feel awful! Instead, focus on the now and what you can do to get your work done without saying “what if I don’t complete this assignment on time?” Instead, you can say something to yourself like, “I’m doing the best I can and I will get this project done.”

6. Coffee

Try to reduce your coffee intake because it can make you super stressed as it makes your blood pump faster, makes your limbs shaky and inreases anxiety in those prone to it. Opt for green tea, which keeps you up but has a calming effect. Or better yet, try a protein rich snack to keep your energy up and keep you properly nourished. Try almonds, peanut butter and banana, or a protein bar.

7. Communicate With Your Boss

If your boss gives you a crazy workload on top of what you already have to do, have your boss tell you what your most pressing task is.  Oftentimes bosses don’t know exactly what your workload entails, so by showing him or her your task list, he or she may be able to slash someone of the non-important work. If they still want you to increase your workload, say you will, but ask if you can put project B on hold for the time being.

8. Don’t Go Overboard

If your boss asks you when you can complete a task by, give him or her a timeline that gives you more than enough time to finish it, so that you’re not killing yourself to complete it on time and you may be able to finish the project early and look great in front of your boss. Otherwise, you’re going to be breaking your back trying to complete a task under a ridiculous timeline, stressing yourself out, and causing you to submit subpar work.
