Bagels are an American staple for breakfasts and brunches everywhere. Over 3 million bagels are consumed each year in the United States. That’s a whole lot of dough! Bagels were first produced in Poland in the 1600s, and were brought to the US at the turn of the 20th century. It wasn’t until the 1920s that they began to increase in popularity. They were affectionately referred to as the Jewish English Muffin. But just how healthy are these doughy staples?
What’s in a Bagel?
Bagels are made up of flour, salt, water, yeast, and malt. They are roughly 300 calories, that’s equivalent to 4 slices of bread! And what’s even worse is that no one usually eats a bagel plain. The common toppings can add a ton of excess calories, fat, and sugar. A bagel with regular cream cheese can have 500 calories and 20 grams of unhealthy fat.
How to Keep Your Bagel Healthy
If you’re a bagel lover and can’t bear to think of getting rid of your favorite breakfast bread, there are a few ways you can enjoy your bagel and stay healthy too. There are bagel thins sold at grocery stores that offer a lot less calories and dough than traditional bagels. Always try to opt for whole grain bagels because they are chock full of fiber that will keep you feeling full for longer. You can also scoop out some of the center of a regular bagel for a less caloric option. And of course, go light on the toppings. If you can’t live without cream cheese, go for the light version and only spread a thin layer.
Although bagels aren’t the healthiest option, you can take these steps to make sure they don’t take up your entire calorie allocation for the day.
