4 Ways To Lower Health Risks Caused By Negative Thinking

Have you ever considered that your physical health problems could be directly related to your thoughts?  It may seem crazy to you, but studies are finding that the way we think, worry and feel about life’s situations, have a direct connection to the way our body is operating.  Someone who often worries about their health, for example, can lead to having digestive problems. The reason this is, is because when a person is worried and nervous all of the time, the body releases unhealthy chemicals, which over time hurts the body.  But these problems can range from poor digestive health to actually messing with our internal organs.  So we need to change the way we are thinking in order to change the health of our body.  

1. Become Aware of Your Body Symptoms


You can track how your negative thoughts are affecting your body.  Think about how you feel after you have put yourself down.  For example, say you just went to a party and because you didn’t know anyone, you stayed quiet in the corner.  You may go home that night thinking, “I’m so stupid!  Why didn’t I just socialize like everybody else?  People at the party probably thought I was rude and unsociable!”  You may notice that after you say this to yourself, your stomach tightens, your heart rate increases and you feel uncomfortable in your own skin.  Well this could be the start to negative effects on your body.

2. Combat Negative Thoughts

A good way to combat negative thoughts is to change what you are saying to yourself.  Although it may be extremely hard in the beginning, the more you do something, the more of a habit it becomes and the easier it gets.  So start replacing those negative thoughts with something positive and see how it makes you feel right after.  So if you were shy at a party, instead of beating up on yourself, you can say something like.  “I was feeling uncomfortable because I didn’t know anyone, I’m human and that feeling is perfectly normal.  At least I had the guts to go to the party in the first place.  If I didn’t like how I acted, I can learn from this and choose to push myself to be more outgoing at the next party.”  Most likely your body is going to feel relaxed after you say this to yourself, and this makes for a healthier body long term.


3. Write Thoughts Down

Write your negative thoughts down on paper, crumple them up and throw them in the trash.  The act of doing this sends signals to your brain saying that your thought needs to be released.   Think about it, the body affects the mind and vice versa.   By holding onto a negative thought, our minds and bodies stay stuck and our unfavorable thoughts get bigger in our minds.  This can result in digestive problems, anxiety and depression.  When I was facing a particular difficult situation, I called up  one of my good friends and told her my situation, she suggested that I write my intrusive thoughts down and vent all of my frustrations on paper, then burn the paper. Surprisingly, this really helped. It was a cathartic experience that allowed me to get some kind of closure on my situation. This may also help you.

4. Intriguing Study

 A study down gathered 83 people and had them write down negative thoughts about their body image.  Some people were asked to hold on to their notes, while others were asked to trash them.  Those who held on to their notes were recorded as feeling particularly negative about their bodies, while those who trashed them didn’t have additional negative feelings when talking about their bodies.

Whether it’s throwing away your negative thoughts, burning them, or whatever other tool you use to symbolically get rid of them, do it because the act can have a tremendous effect on your mind’s ability to let the negative thoughts go.
