Tips to Knock Out Your Workout – Even When You Don’t Feel Like It


Working out is great for the body, and has plenty of mental and physical benefits. It can help keep stress at bay, it will help you maintain or restore physical wellbeing, and it can help you clear your head. But sometimes the last thing we feel like doing is exercising. If you find yourself feeling this way, give these tips a try. Studies show they can help kick you into gear.

Tackle Your Workout 10 Minutes at a Time

If the thought of an hour long workout is deterring you from getting started, break it up into ten minute spurts instead. Start your day with a brisk ten minute jog. At lunch, walk around your building for another ten.  Shorter workouts like these are easier to tackle, but can still provide the health benefits of a longer workout block.

Get Outdoors

According to research, exercising in nature is a reinforcing behavior, so the more you do it, the more you will want to do it again. A little fresh air can go a long way, so mix up your routine with an outdoor workout. Biking is a great low impact exercise that has both cardiovascular and strength benefits. Or head to park and use the playground equipment for some resistance training (chin ups, sit ups, squats, etc.)

Turn Up the Music

Studies show that the body responds to music and rhythm, so fast paced jams can up your intensity and your motivation. There are lots of workout playlist suggestions online, and there are even gadgets you can purchase that will pick songs for you based on your heart rate/pace.


You know the old saying, “Fake it until you make it”? This holds some weight when it comes to working out. Simply smiling can trigger changes in the brain that lead to actual happiness. So if you are struggling to make it through the rest of your run or finish those last few reps, start grinning. And hey, you might lift the spirits of your fellow gym-goers as well!
